JAIN CAVE TEMPLES |
|
Temples constitute the place of worship bestowing sanctity and ethical
stratum to the devotees. People find it as a source of solace for
their upheavals in life. Belief plays a major role in entwining the
relationship between the devotees and God installed in the form of an
image in the sanctum sanctorum. The ancestors pf the era built
numerous places of worship as seen amongst the different religions of
the country such as Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Though they put
forth the view that God is omnipotent and omniscient a placement
of abode was prescribed for Him to presumably fulfill the needs of his
devotees.
The Jains constructed
the temples and called them Basadis in South India. Jainism was inbred
much more in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu than other parts of South India.
The Jain monks were found seeking solitude to observe their religious
austerities. This led to the formation of cave temples which formed
the habitats for their performance of the religious rights and
penance. The cave temples occupy a significant position in the Jain
architecture and sculptor. The bedrocks constituted as a pride of
place for carving the caves. Many caves of this types are found around
Madurai, Tirunalveli and also South Arcot districts in Tamil Nadu. The
unique character of the natural caverns draw the attention of the
pilgrims. One can also find the presence of many stone inscriptions
and also carvings of Tirthankaras in the walls of the caverns. The
cave temples stand as lithic monuments in the history of Jainism.
The Badrabahu cave in the Chandragiri
hill of Shravanabelagola bears the footprints of Badrabahu the last
shrutakevali. The most ancient Jaina cave temples are found atop
Khandagiri and Udayagiri near Bhubaneshwar in Orissa. Badami (Bijapur
district, Karnataka), Mangi Tungi in Nasik district (Maharashtra) and
Ellora cave temples appeared latter than Khandagiri caves. Samrat
Kharavela was credited with "Raaninoora cave" amongst Khandagiri caves
This belongs to 200 B.C. The Jain temple of Ellora is admired much by
the scholars and the common folk alike due to its artistic beauty.
Mangi Tungi cave temples belong to 12th and 13th centuries.
The caves served the purpose not only as
a place o habitation for the monks but also for preaching and
propagating the religion at large. The Pandyan kings, chieftains and
the civilians particularly the merchant community were the ardent
patrons of Jainism who built the cave temples in Tamil Nadu, the state
well known for its treasure of Jain cave temples in India. A few Jain
cave temples were converted into Shaiva abode in the latter years.
The Contribution of the Jainism to the
heritage of India is reflected through its architectural constructions
like Jain cave temples.
Thanking you,

FIFTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON PEACE AND NON VIOLENT ACTION |
|
Mumbai, February 28:
The V International Conference on Peace
and Non Violent Action organized by ANUVIBHA (Anuvrath Global
Organisation,
a transnational
center for peace and nonviolent action associated
with
the Department of Public Information of the United Nations)
was successfully held at
Rajsamand and Mumbai from Feb 23 to 28, 2003. The theme chosen for
discussion this time was Seeking the True Meaning of a Culture of
Peace and Nonviolence for the Children of the World. It was in
consonance with the spirit of the UN Resolution declaring the Decade
2001 to 2010 as the Decade of a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence for
the Children of the World. In view of Anuvibha’s contribution to the
global campaign for a culture of peace UNESCO had already included it
in the list of actors of a culture of peace of the world. The main
objective of the conference was to formulate a universally acceptable
programme for a culture of peace and familiarize the peace academics,
grassroots workers, nonviolence exponents and religious leaders of the
world with the three-dimensional programme of human regeneration
embedded in a culture of ahimsa being run under the dynamic leadership
of Anuvrat Anushasta His Holiness Acharya Mahapragya, the revered Jain
Spiritual Leader. It comprises Anuvrat Movement, a movement that seeks
individual commitment to basic vows, Jivan Vigyan (science of living)
and Preksha Meditation, a strategy for inner transformation.
The conference was
attended by 26 highly committed overseas delegates hailing from twelve
countries and 70 India delegates representing several prestigious
organizations. It was inaugurated by Mr. Feodor Starcevik, Director,
UN Information Centre, New Delhi. Dr. S.L. Gandhi, the organizing
secretary of the V ICPNA, and the International Secretary General of
ANUVIBHA welcomed the delegates and enlightened them about the
historical background as wall as the objectives of the conference. He
also introduced the distinguished delegates and plenary presenters.
Samani Pratibha Prajna read the special message of Acharya Mahapragya
sent on the eve of the conference. In his message the Acharya said,
“It is regrettable that violence appears natural while nonviolence
appears imposed and unnatural on account of its distorted perception
and the absence of a concrete programme of training in ahimsa”. He
further said, “The conference being organized under the auspices of
ANUVIBHA should inspire the delegates to have a new outlook on the
concept of training in nonviolence”. Samani Pratibha Prajna presented
a four-point formula of training in nonviolence comprised of purity
of heart, purity of thought, balanced lifestyle and purity of conduct.

VIJAYANAGAR
JAIN
ICON UNEARTHED |
|
Tiruchi (Tamil Nadu), March 17: Six stone statues, including those of Mahavira, Jeyshtadevi and Muruga, have been unearthed from a field in Gundur
near here where it is believed there was once a temple. The two and a
half feet high by two feet wide icon of Mahavira, seated on a throne
in a meditative posture, was said to be rare. The idols of Sridevi,
Bhoodevi and Vishnu indicated that a temple dedicated to Vishnu
existed in the past at the site, a view supported by the presence of a
Siva temple in the vicinity. The presence of "nilothpala" in hand
suggested that the three idols belonged to the early Vijayanagar
period. The site was identified about two years ago and permission had
been granted for the unearthing and safe custody of the statues in the
museum. - Jain Heritage Centres News Service |

INSCRIPTION THROWS LIGHT ON HOYSALA KINGS AND JAIN RELATIONS |
|
Chickmagalur (Karnataka), April 6: A stone inscription, which throws light on the Hoysala genealogy, has been found while renovating a temple near
Uppali on the outskirts of Chikmagalur. The inscription, which
contains 58 lines, dates back to the period of the Hoysala king,
Narasimha I (1142-1173 A.D.). H.M. Nagaraj Rao, epigraphist, Mysore
University, and Harish Singatagere have deciphered the inscription.
The inscription reveals that King Vishnuvardhana was ruling from
Bankapura in 1136 A.D. It further states that the king had three sons
- Ballala Deva, Narasimha, and Vijayanarayana. It was hitherto unknown
that Vishnuvardhana had a son named Vijayanarayana, it is said. The
inscription states that Vishnuvardhana donated Sindagere and Kiriya
Muguli (present-day Chickkamagalur) to Meghachandradeva, a Jain saint
whose brother Goggimayya was an officer under Vishnuvardhana. Other
details contained in the inscription are that Jagadala Mahadevi,
daughter-in-law of King Vinayaditya, built the Vinayaditya Hoysala
Jinalaya, a Jain temple at Muguli, and donated some land to her guru,
Gunachandra Bhattaraka. - Jain Heritage Centres

JAIN TEMPLE LOOT : COOPS INVESTIGATE LOCAL ANGLE |
|
Vadodara, April 6: EVEN as the police on Sunday prepared a
sketch of some of the armed men who robbed valuables from a Jain
temple in the Panchmahals late on Friday, they are continuing to
investigate the role of local gangs in the robbery. More than a dozen
Gujarati-speaking armed men assaulted the priest and guard of a Jain
temple in Bedia village in the Panchmahals and fled with idols and
cash amounting to Rs 3.54 lakh on Friday night.
Head Balayogi Jaisagar
Maharaj and security guard Rangeet Vitthal Goswami sustained injuries
in the attack. Miscreants fled with as many as nine idols from the
temple. Panchmahals police chief Narsimha Komar said based on the
statement of two Sadhvis, who were present at the temple when the
incident took place, computer-generated sketches were produced. Komar
said the sketches would be distributed in several places in the
Panchmahals, adjoining Dahod district and even in places on the
MP-Gujarat border. Police said the investigators were yet to get a
statement from the main priest as he was still in shock.
Komar said before preparing the sketch based on the Sadhvis’
statement, the police had got corroborative statements from some
witnesses. ‘‘We wanted to be sure about the miscreants’ identity,’’
Komar said.‘‘We are trying to look at gangs, which have been
operational in the area off late and are going after some suspects,’’
said officials. adding that some places were raided by the police on
Sunday but they failed to track them down. -

|
Mumbai,
April 6: Gold ornaments worth Rs
70,000 were stolen from the Jain Derasar on Zaver Road. According
to the temple's trust, the ornaments worn by the main idol were
found missing in the afternoon. Says a trustee, "The temple closes
at 2 pm and re-opens at 4 pm. At 2 pm when the pujari went for
lunch, the ornaments were in place. However, when he returned the
ornaments were missing”. Trust officials add that they do
not allow devotees to enter the temple during that time. Adds the
trustee, "We have security guards at the gate who ask all visitors
to leave before
|
closing the temple. We have no clue how
this happened."
The trust has not lodged a complaint with the police yet. Says VD
Gala, chairman of the trust, "We are making enquiries from our side.
We are yet to decide about lodging a police complaint."
A member of the trust who did not wish to be named says that the trust
does not intend to lodge a complaint. He says, "There are several
people working in the temple. We fear the police may target them.
Why should innocents suffer for a crime committed by one or two
persons? We are now thinking about the increasing safety measures."
