ASHTAHNIKA PARVA |
This unique celebration occupies the foremost place among the Jains only
next to the observation of Dashalakshanaparva. Ashta means eight and
Aanika means everyday. This is celebrated three times in a year i.e.
in the months of Ashad, Karthik and Phalgun from the last eighth day till
the full moon day. It is also called Nandishwar Ashtahnika when
celebrated in the months of Ashad and Phalgun. Conceptually it is described
that there exists the eighth island on the earth called Nandishwara
and there are 52 Jain temples there being worshipped by the angels. However
human beings are forbidden or it is an arduous task to reach there by the
devotees and hence all the pooja celebrations are observed by them on the
earth. The Nandishwara island is surrounded by the mountains namely Anjana
parvat (1), Dadhimukha parvat (4) and Ratikara parvat (8). Each parvat will
be having a Jain temple. There exists a period of four months with heavy
rainfall from Ashada masa to Karthik masa and the Jain sadhus stay in a
single place and observe the rituals and such a period is called chaturmas.
During this period of stay in a single place the ascetics endeavour to
attain realisation of soul. On the contrary shravakas will observe
ritualistic practices at home and temples.
The Jaina works provide a vivid picture of Ashtahnika parva. According to
Ravisenacharya's Padmapurana the king Dasharath observed the parva
gloriously in the month of Karthik and spent the days by worshipping Lord
Jina. According to Shreepalacharithre Mainasundari cleared off the
leprosy disease during the Karthika Ashtahnika period. Akalankadeva the
great Acharya defeated the Buddhist missionaries in this month. He
propagated Jaina philosophy in a classic way among the Jains. The
observation of this parva is said to fulfill the desires and aspirations of
the people.
The parva occupies the unique position in the Digambar sect. The people also
observe Siddhachakra pooja vidhan during this period. A similar
observation is made in the Shwethambar sect also where it gains a greater
importance. The parva constitutes a unique means to understand adhyathmic
philosophy and achievement of the religion.

KHARAVELA
FESTIVAL: SHOWCASE OF ORISSA’S JAIN HERITAGE
- Prabhukalyan
Mohapatra |
Bhubaneshwar (Orissa), February 16: The week long national Kharavela
festival coinciding with the traditional Magha Saptami Mela, is being
observed at the foothills of historic Khandagiri and Udayagiri in
Bhubaneswar. The festival commemorates the heroic and brilliant rule of the
greatest Jain ruler of Kalinga, Kharavela and at the same time showcases the
rich tapestry of Orissan classical folk dance, music, handicraft and
handlooms.
The festival has been named after Kharavela, the mighty
emperor of Kalinga, whose glorious activities and achievements have been
inscribed in the Hati-gumpha (elephant-cave) dated 1st century B.C. in
Udayagiri hills (Kumari-parvat). As a ruler, he is attributed in restoring
the glory of Kalinga through his political and military achievements.
Kharavela’s greatness in history rests not merely on conquests; rather he is
remembered as a protagonist and patron of Jainism. The architectural and
sculptural grandeur of the rock-cut caves hewed by Kharavela in Khandagiri
and Udayagiri are indictive not only of his religious fervor but were
regarded as the precursor of the temple architecture that followed during
his reign.

These twin heritage hills cover an area of 200 acres
and are protected monuments of Archeological Survey of India. There are
about 18 rocks - hewn apartments at Udayagiri alone, with Hatigumpha
(elephant-cave) bearing the well known inscription of King Kharavela.
Ranigumpha (Queen’s cave) of Udayagiri, one of the largest and double
storied is ornately embellished with beautiful carvings. The lower storey of
Ranigumpha depicts the King accompanied by two queens and attendants,
enjoying the dancing. Manchapuri-gumpha tells about the installation of the
image of Kalinga Jina which was brought back from Magadha by the mighty
emperor after a victorious campaign.
Khandagiri has 15 caves and the cave numbers 7, 8 & 9
contain the images of Jain Tirthankars. Huge residential blocks carved out
of the rocks for the Jain monks are also a big attraction. A temple was also
constructed on the crest of Khandagiri for worshipping Jain shrine in early
part of the 19th century. At present, there are five temples where images of
Adinath, Sitalnath, Rasvanath and Parsvanath are being worshipped.
In the history of rock - cut architecture of India, especially of eastern
India, these caves have a significant place, where exists beautiful carvings
of floral, vegetal, linear decorative sculptural designs as well as animal
and human figures. While the animal figures include elephant, horses, lions
and deer; parrots, doves, goose, crane, snakes, lizards etc., can also be
seen. Human figures comprising of King, Queen, Tirthankars, dancers,
officials and priests too form a part of the carvings.
The sculptural design of Khandagiri and Udayagiri caves
provide glimpses into the social life of people during the reign of
Kharavela, where men used to wear turbans and women enjoyed a great deal of
freedom which is evident from their participation in dance and musical
performance on the rock surface. Apart from the caves rock - cut reservoirs
are also seen here which hold rain water.
Here in the back drop of the great historical monument
and coinciding with the traditional Magha Saptami Mela, this festival has
been planned in a beautiful ambience of tradition and modernity. Hence
adding colour and fervor to the traditional mela which lakhs of visitors
throng for a period of seven days. To entertain the tourists, cultural
programmes are presented each evening throughout the festival. While the
cultural troupes of the state perform Odissi, Sambalpuri, Chhow, Ghodanacha,
and Shankhabadan as items of folk art shows; the participation by the
various Central Government departments makes the festival even more lively
and spirited. Moreover, the participation of the galaxy of artists of
National and International repute in the cultural extravaganza transcends
this week long Kharvela festival into a national carnival. Exhibition of
Orissa’s handicraft and handlooms like stonewares, bell-metal utensils,
artifacts for interior decoration adds to the charm making the festival a
buyers’ paradise. -Article Courtesy: PIB Features

Bhubaneshwar (Orissa), March 16:
Efforts are on to get the historic Khandagiri and Udaygiri hills, located in

MERCEDES-BENZ TO OFFER 'VEGETARIAN' OPTIONS FOR ALL FUTURE MODELS
|
Detroit (USA), February 23: Vegetarians will be pleased to learn that top luxury automaker Mercedes-Benz
informed People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA Europe Ltd) that
all future Mercedes-Benz models will be available with a leather-free option
either at the dealership or via special order in all markets.
It
takes four cows to make the leather interior for one Mercedes, and the
company’s announcement follows PETA’s consumer-driven campaign to pressure
Mercedes to offer alternatives to a leather interior.
PETA pointed out that leather is offensive to millions of people, including
to the many Hindus and Jains who help make up Britain’s wealthiest minority
community.
Campaign supporters included Jain leader HH Gurudev Shri Chitrabhanuji,
Indian MP Maneka Gandhi and actor James Cromwell, whose credits include The
Sum of All Fears, The Green Mile, The General’s Daughter, and Babe, for
which he received an Academy Award nomination. Cromwell had asked
DaimlerChrysler representatives for a face-to-face meeting at its German
headquarters, and Gandhi had threatened an India-wide Mercedes boycott.
Mercedes-Benz joins a growing list of car companies that are acknowledging
today’s socially conscious consumers who refuse to use leather. In December
2004, PETA Europe thanked Saab for announcing that consumers can order any
Saab model with a leather-free interior. And in recognition of its stand not
to equip its hot-selling gasoline-electric hybrid Prius with a leather
interior, automaker Toyota recently won PETA US’s Proggy “Breakthrough”
Award. (Proggy is short for progress.)
American tanneries that serve the auto industry buy enough skin each year to
upholster Manhattan two and a half times. Production-line speedups and
inadequate stunning on North American and European kill floors mean that
cows killed for their skins and flesh are often dismembered while still
conscious. Leather tanneries also wreak havoc on the environment, and their
pollution has been linked to cancer, respiratory infections and other
illnesses.
“Car companies are learning that offering leather-free options is
environmentally and ethically responsible”, says PETA Europe campaigner
Poorva Joshipura. “We are delighted that Mercedes-Benz will accommodate
luxury car consumers who think cruelty is unimpressive.”

SO SAID
ABOUT JAINISM... |
This column spells
out the sayings and derivations of the scholars of both India and
abroad alike. These will stand as testimony to comprehensively
understand the interreligious relations and the views about Jainism. |
True Path of
Liberty and Justice |
The Jain thought is of high
antiquity. The myth of its being an off-shoot of Hinduism or
Buddhism has now been exploded by recent historical researches. The
Ratan Traya of the Jain thinkers is the true path towards Liberty
and Justice. The Anekanta-vada or the Syad-vada stands unique in the
world’s thought. The teachings of Jainism will be found on analysis
to be as modern as they are ancient. The Jain teachers were the
first and foremost in the history of human thought to propound the
principle of Ahinsa.

KARUNA
CLUB SET UP IN WOMEN'S COLLEGE |
Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Feb 16: The greatness of a nation can be judged by
the way its animals are treated, said Mahatma Gandhi. Following his
principle, Meenakshi College for Women started Karuna Club, an association
of students who pledge to work for human and animal welfare, in their
college to promote vegetarianism and to lead a life of compassion and work
for human and animal welfare.
Lavanya, head, Department of Commerce in the college, said the idea to start
the club was to make the younger generation more compassionate towards
humans and animals besides promoting vegetarianism. The club had now 450
students from the Department of Commerce. The students would involve
themselves in supporting every activity of human and animal welfare and
prevent ill treatment to animals.
Dr Chinny Krishna, chairman, Blue Cross of India, said that doing
something for animals was always looked upon as charity in the country but
it was not so, as it was a social responsibility. Karuna teaches students
the proper way to lead life without harming the animals and promote
vegetarianism. Chinny Krishna inaugurated a poster exhibition of 'Beauty
Without Cruelty' organised by Bhawanesh Kumar Deora, a Lions Club member.
They also screened a documentary film on the importance of animal welfare on
the college premises. Dulichand Jain, president, Karuna International, C S
Krishna, vice-president, Karuna International, Lakshmi, principal of the
college, were also present on the occasion.

BELL
THIEF CAUGHT BY DERASAR ATTENDANT |
Vadodara, March 14: A 49-YEAR-OLD man was on Sunday evening caught
red-handed while stealing a brass bell from the Derapol Jain derasar. Arvind
Ajmera, a Mumbai-based real estate agent who had been putting up at a Jain
dharmashala in Mandvi area of the city for the past 11 days, has irked Jain
leaders in the city who think that he is an accused in the divine court.
City-based Jain leaders held that this is the third such incident within a
span of two weeks.
On
Sunday evening, Ajmera was noticed around at the Derapol Jain derasar near
Dandia Bazaar. The temple attendant, Lakshman Baria, found his intentions
suspicious and kept an eye on him. Seeking an opportunity, Ajmera brought
down the bell, bagged it in a cloth bag and walked out of the temple. When
the temple attendant followed him, he took off on foot. After a one
kilometer chase, Baria caught up with him near the Dandia Bazaar chowk where
Ajmera was roughed up by bystanders and handed over to the Raopura police.
‘‘We were returning from Mauri,
when my grandson fell from his train seat and hurt himself. We needed money
to treat him and so I decided to steal the bell,’’ said Ajmera. The bell is
estimated to be worth Rs 2,500. ‘‘Earlier bells had been stolen from Akota
Jain derasar and Sasan Samrat Jain derasar. Ajmera himself is a Jain.
Considering that even consumption of fruit is prohibited inside a derasar,
Ajmera has committed a great offence,’’ said president of Sasan Samrat Jain
derasar, Rajan Shah. Raopura police said that they are investigating certain
loose ends in his story and his involvement in other theft cases.

2005 220 x 145 mm 1084 pp in 3 vols. + 4 maps
81 246 0316 2 (Set) Hardcover Rs. 1650
This is a superlative work on the history of Jainism. The work has
been divided into three volumes.
Volume One: Mahavir ke Purva Jaina Dharma aur Uska Kala
This volume deals with historical evidences supporting
the existence of Tirthankara Parshvanatha some three centuries before
Mahavira. Mahavira's Era is examined minutely, sufficient attention
has been paid to the religious, philosophical, theological, political,
artistic, literary and social developments of that time.
Volume Two: Jaina Dharma ka Aitihasika Sarvekshana aur Prasara
This volume carries out an historical survey of the
Jaina religion. A detailed study is made of its expansion and spread,
linking it with favourably inclined rulers. The contribution of some
famous Jaina monks, nuns and lay followers is also explained. The
genesis of sanghas, gacchas and jñatis is also closely examined in
this section. It is interesting to see that the author has also
attempted to examine the roots of gotras still prevalent in the Jaina
community today.
Volume Three : Madhyakalina Jaina Dharma
Section Three deals with medieval Jainism. During Muslim rule, Jainism
continued to flourish in pockets. This book presents a special article
by noted historian Dr.A.H. Nizami on the impact of Muslim rule on the
Jaina Dharma and Jaina monkshood, especially the establishment of the
Bhattaraka tradition in South and Western India. The following article
by Dr. Surendra Gopal describes the social and economic status of the
Jaina community in the medieval era. Scholarly articles by Dr. S.S.
Nigam and Dr. Prakashchandra Jain throw light on the life and times of
the Jain community of the time.
