MAHAVIR JAYANTHI

Sixth century B.C. was the eventful period in the history of the world. It revolutionised the terrestrial and celestial worlds due to the birth of great doyens such as Lord Mahavir and Lord Buddha in India, Sukaratha in Greece, Zorathustra in Persia, Conficious in China and Yahudis in Palestine. The other luminaries born during the period included Poorna Kashyapa, Makkhali Ghoshala, Ajitha Keshakambali, Pakudha Katyayana and Sanjaya Belatti. However These luminaries extinguished with out any traces. But Lord Mahavir survived and revived Jainism.

Lord Mahavir was born as the 24th prophet at Koundanyapura (Kundapura or Kundagrama village) in the kingdom of Magadha in the northern part of the present day Bihar state on March 27th 598 B.C. (the Chaitra Shudda Triodashi day of Uttara Phalguna Nakshatra, Kanya Rashi). Kundupura is the present Basada village in Muzzafarnagar district of Bihar. His father was Siddartha (also called Shreyamsa and Yashamsa) and the mother was Trishala Devi, the daughter of Chetaka an eminent Lichchavi noble of Vaishali. They were the followers of the tradition of Parshwanath the 23rd prophet. Vishali the present Vasada was the republic state of ancient India. Vaishali was situated adjacent to the banks of the river Gandaki. Trishaladevi was also called by other names such as Priyakarini and Videhadatta who belonged to Vashishta gothra (family tree). She dreamt sixteen dreams signaling the birth of a great personality. Bhavanapathy, Vyantara, Jyotishka and Vimanavasi, the Gods and Goddesses adored the child Mahavir with flowers, gold and emeralds. Indra and Indrani arrived from heaven at Kundalapura. Indrani brought the child and placed in the hands of Devendra. He carried the child to the Sumeru mountain and worshiped it with abhishkeha and celebrated the birth of the tirthankara with pomp and glory. The people of Magadha kingdom rejoiced his birth. The kingdom flourished exuberantly and the prosperity of the people grew in leaps and bounds soon after his birth. Hence his father Siddartha named him as Vardhaman. The naming ceremony was celebrated in the palace with grandeur. He was studious, well built and courageous even as a child. He controlled the raged elephants and serpents and also the human conflicts and hence was called Mahavir.  Sanjaya and Vijaya the Charana munis were content with the glowing erudition of Mahavir and called him Sanmathi. Mahavir possessed in explicable talent and treat since the time of his birth. He was an embodiment of perfection and talent of virtues. He didn’t possess any inclination or passion for worldly wealth and pleasures and hence relinquished these.

Mahavir had the glorious past with regard to religion. He was a born Kshatriya. He belonged to Kashyapa gothra. Mahavir was also called Jnathru, Jnathaputra and Jnathrukulotpanna as he was born in the famous Jnathru clan. He became as ascetic at the age of thirty, practiced it rigorously for 12 years and attained kaivalya (sumprmacy of knowledge and the final deliverance from the bonds of pleasure and pain) at the age of 42.Vardhaman Mahavir reorganized the religion and preached celibacy as one of the doctrines of Jainism to the previously existing four doctrines of nonviolence, truthfulness, no possessiveness and non stealing as preached by Lord Parshwanath. He traveled through different parts of India and enlightened the people.

The eternal message of Lord Mahavir influenced and revolutionised the lives of the people and made their births sublime. He released the people from the bondages of exploitation, inequality and magnified their thoughts. His concept of Live and Let Live has paved the way for the fruitful living of people. The birth of Mahavir is observed with reverence and devotion by his followers across the globe as Mahavir Janma Kalyana or Mahavir Jayanthi.

WWW.JAINHERITAGECENTRES.COM wishes all its esteemed readers a very happy Mahavir Jayanthi.

'CULTURAL COMPLEX' OF THE JAIN CENTRE OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA INAUGURATED

Buena Park: With the inauguration of the new cultural complex on Sunday, March 27, 2005, the Jain Center of Southern California (JCSC) accomplished another major milestone in its monumental efforts to build a fine Jain Tirth in North America. The 60,000 sq ft facility located in the City of Buena Park, a suburb of Los Angeles, was completed at a cost of $11 million. The overwhelming enthusiasm and unwavering dedication of the Jain community for this project can be observed from the following examples. Three families – Manibhai & Savitaben Mehta, Harshadbhai & Rakshaben Shah and an anonymous family – have each donated over $751,000 for this project. On the day of the inauguration, Jayeshbhai and Ramilaben Shah pledged $1 million as an interest free loan, to match a similar amount to be raised from the community. Within ten minutes members in the audience rose to the challenge and committed $1,400,000 in loans for the project.

The inauguration ceremonies were attended by nearly 1,400 participants, which included Jain community members, leaders of other Indian organizations and political leaders from Buena Park and nearby cities. The inaugural ceremony began with the symbolic "Kumbh Sthapan" - a traditional ceremony performed especially before entering or moving into a new place - by Reshma Shah, daughter of Rakshaben and Harshadbhai Shah. Traditional divi lamps were lit by Buena Park Mayor Pro Tem Art Brown, JAINA Vice President Shri Kiritbhai Daftari, keynote speaker Shri Shaileshbhai Mehta, Jain Center of Northern California President Shri Hasubhai Shah and Mrs. Bindi Doshi, first lady of Jain Center of Southern California.

Mayor Pro Tem Brown congratulated the community on its achievement and its contribution to the City of Buena Park. A plaque of appreciation for the Jain Community was presented by City of Artesia Councilman Tony Mendoza to Ramesh Doshi, president of JCSC. The agenda of items also included recognition of community members, donors and volunteers interspersed with cultural programs presented by children and emceed by Pallaviben Doshi. The success of the project was attributed to a team of dedicated volunteers - members of the Building Committee led by past president and building committee chairman Sumatibhai Shah - who for the past four years met every Sunday morning at the Jain Center to plan and coordinate the design and construction activities. JCSC history and Jain contribution to culture were narrated by past presidents and current directors Dr. Manibhai Mehta and Dr. Nitinbhai Shah. The keynote speaker Shaileshbhai Mehta said that by building the multi-purpose cultural complex alongside the temple, the association has achieved the dual purpose of having people visit the temple and get involved in community activities as well – something that is in tune with the changing times and should be emulated by other centers. Mr. Ramesh Doshi said that the plans include decoration of the interior of the cultural complex with museum quality Jain art along with a 35 ft high 100-year-old teak wood replica of a temple in India. He added, "When complete, the Jain Center will be the envy of the best of museums in Southern California. Visitors will not only learn about the Jain religion, but will learn the Jain way of life including the principle of non-violence that influenced Mahatma Gandhi in the successful non-violent struggle for the independence of India from British rule." Vice President Ashok Savla thanked guests, cultural show participants and volunteers. Ribbon cutting by donors and lunch sponsored by Chandrikaben Manubhai Shah and family followed.

A custom-designed Jain Center to address the religious, cultural and educational needs of a Jain community was first inaugurated in July of 1988. With a phenomenal increase in the size of the community, estimated 1,000 families with 700 life members families, as well as a rapid growth in the number of religious, educational, cultural, and community outreach activities, JCSC recognized a need to expand the existing Jain Center. A vision of this expansion was conceived nearly 10 years ago, and an effort to make such a vision a reality began with the process of acquiring neighboring properties of land. Over the years, the input of the community was solicited to compile a wish list of requirements with one goal – to stay as a single, unified organization while accommodating the needs of all Jains. Following a community consensus and a unified support, a master plan to expand the existing facility into a multipurpose Jain Center complex was developed in three phases:

• Phase I - A cultural complex with a large auditorium, Swadhyay rooms, and a museum of history, art and heritage. This complex was inaugurated on Sunday, March 27, 2005.

• Phase II - A religious complex with the Derasar and an Aradhana Hall. Construction of this complex is tentatively scheduled to begin in July 2005.

• Phase III - Atama Sadhana Kendra with Study/Pathshala rooms and the JAINA/JCSC National Library. With over 10,000 books, manuscripts and multi-media resources, this library is one of the largest collections outside of India. Construction of this facility will be scheduled after completion of Phase II.

The graceful features of a traditional Jain temple are reflected in the architecture of the entire complex. The exterior of the building is constructed of superbly carved Jaisalmer yellow limestone designed, manufactured and supplied from India. A consultant from India has designed and will supply various artifacts for interior decoration of the complex. Such artifacts will include paintings, murals, tapestries, sculptures, and other media to depict the Jain religion, art, history, culture, heritage, and Jain way of life. The interior of the temple will be constructed from carved marble pieces that will also be shipped from India. When completed, the Jain Center will become a prominent destination of international repute for pilgrimage, cultural, and scholarly pursuits.

JCSC is honored to acknowledge that it was one of the four original organizations which founded Jain Associations In North America (JAINA) at a meeting hosted by JCSC in Los Angeles 25 years ago. -News Courtesy: www.jaincenter.net

Hon’ble Mrs. Roosvelt Struck Most

The only panacea to heal up the wounded humanity is the principle of Ahinsa. It is the onerous duty of Jain community to spread their sublime principle of Ahinsa far and wide. Hon’ble Mrs. Roosvelt visited India. What struck her most in our country is our cultural morality of Ahinsa, with which Indians fought out successfully battle of Independence.

BHANSALI AMONG THOSE CONFERRED WITH MAHAVIR MAHATMA AWARD

Mumbai (Maharashtra), April 9: The convergence of music and spirituality can draw people even at midnight. This was evident at the Mahavir Mahatma Awards 2005 for Oneness—a midnight celebration of Divinity by the Oneness Forum, a Times Foundation initiative—on the auspicious occasion of Gudi Padwa on April 9. Awards were conferred on Hindustani classical singer Sanjeev Abhyankar, film-maker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, fashion designer Krishna Mehta, architect Jimmy Mistry and social worker Sameer Salgaocar for putting their time, effort and spiritual thoughts to create something unique in their chosen field. The awards ceremony was held at the ITC Grand Maratha Sheraton, Sahar.
Abhyankar said the award meant a greater sense of responsibility “as I need to take Hindustani classical music forward and do justice to the award’’. His contribution in the field of Hindustani classical music is not limited to just vocal but also the spiritual content of singing, leading to oneness.  Bhansali, who came with his mother, believed that his work would do the talking. While giving away the award, Sarabjit Dhawan, vice president-west of ITC Hotels, said, “What should I say about this man who has dealt with such a difficult subject,’’ referring to Bhansali’s latest film Black. Bhansali was chosen for the award for making socially relevant films that appeal to the universal human consciousness, thus leading to oneness.
Krishna Mehta was awarded for her sincere promotion of khadi fabric and non-leather products in the world of fashion, symbolic of taking ahead the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, leading to oneness. Mistry, who was honoured for his contribution in the fields of design and architecture, said, “When awards come from outside my fraternity, they are dear to me.’’  Salgaocar’s social work at the grassroots level and promotion of Indian handicraft, weavers, education of the rural girl child and nurturing training institutes in the field of art and culture got him the award. SNDT Women’s University’s vice-chancellor Rupa Shah, while giving away the award, said, “I am honoured to give away this award to Sameer as he has been instrumental in promoting education of the girl child in rural areas.’’
Spiritual artist and founder of Adhyatmic Raj Gurukulum, associated with the award, Uday Geetanjali Gadnis, now known as Sadhak Shivananda Saraswati (Shiva) and Dhrishti Foundation along with painters, poets and musicians also paid a spiritual tribute to the great saints of India on the occasion. “To pay a tribute to the divine saints of India is to discover the pathway to the saint within,’’ said Saraswati, who unveiled a 30 x 30 feet spiritual painting. He chose four women—singer Anuradha Paudwal, television actress Smriti Irani, sports personality Anjali Bhagwat and professor Pratibha Naithani—to do the honours in keeping with the theme of the painting ‘Dasha Maha Shakti Nidhis (goddesses of different powers)’, ‘mudded’ with 22k gold with rush ruby paste finishing.
The programme began at 6 pm on Saturday with Hindustani and Classical vocal by advocate Manohar Patwardhan, who sang the ‘Naradiyakeertan’. Ustad Rashid Khan mesmerised the audience with his rendition of ‘Sant Meerabai’, followed by Deepa Thyagarajan who sang ‘Sant Purandaradasa’ and Pandit Ajay Pohankar who recited ‘Sant Kabir Das’.  The music continued from dusk to dawn, with an early Sunday morning spiritual chanting ‘Bramhamuhurtam’. The various district-and state-level Mahavir Mahatma Awards will culminate on Mahavir Jayanti on April 20, at the award ceremony of the Oneness Forum organised by the Bharatiya Jain Sanghatna at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. -News Courtesy: Times News Network

AN EXCITING GALLERY WITH HISTORY IN HYDERABAD

Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh), April 15: Spending a day with history in Hyderabad is all set to become a different experience. An experience that entails time spent in rooms with the legendary Tipu Sultan's sofas, the Nizam's gargantuan bed, a 4,500-year-old Egyptian Mummy and even a Jain gallery. Capping the `historic' experience is the invitation to meditate in the company of the holiest of Buddhist relics in the world.  All this is part of the facelift being given to the State Archaeological Museum in Public Gardens, where the regalia of bygone eras are being polished up and more alluring elements of history added to the exhibits.

While the Mummy will have a separate gallery to showcase the intrigue and charm of the Egyptian civilisation, the country's first exclusive Jain Sculptural Gallery is coming up alongside an amphitheatre studded with antiquities, another first in the country. The antiquities arranged in the amphitheatre include relics unearthed from the Srisailam-submerged areas.

Jain Gallery

The Jain gallery, a collaborative effort with the Jain Seva Sangh, will house arte facts from various periods of Jain history. The gallery will have Jaina Thirthankaras, rare sculptures of goddesses Saraswati and Ambika and the roof will have the `ashtamangalas' of the Jain faith. An auditorium, to be named after Lord Mahavira, is being completed. A `period room' is being readied to take visitors back to the living rooms of the Nawabi era. - News Courtesy: The Hindu
