JAINA RELICS |
|
The contribution of Jainism in terms of Sculpture and Architecture is
immense and vast. The royal patronage for the religion through out
India has reaped a good harvest of Jaina Temples and Monuments.
However, these had a scourge with the test of time resulting in
mutilation and diminition as the religious life pattern of the folk
found it's change. And if we dig into the past many remains and ruins
could be traced which are standing as testimony to the past glory.
Many Jain temples wrre seen transformed into it. Shiva Temples in the
12th and 13th century era. Interestingly, enough the gorgeous
architecture with artistic pillars and beams lying adjacent to Qutab
Minar and it's complex stand as legendary example of the ruined Hindu
and Jain Temples at the place. These historic monuments were
constructed out of the beautifully carved architectural specimens of
the native religions. The relics of the past speak in abundance
regarding the immesurable treasure. Many excavations done in the
Harappa and Monenjodaro civilized sites have further unravelled the
traces of Jainism. The eveidence of "Rishabha Sanskruthi" signifies
both the Jaina and Hindu religions seen in these places. The Mauryas,
Shathavahanas and the Rashtrakootas, Chalukyas (Badami and Kalyana),
Gangas and also the Vijayanagara rulers have exhibited high degree
patronage for Jainism. Digging into the past of the site of
Vijayanagara Empire have brought to light the existing Jain Temples.
The Jainism was found deeply in bread in the villages bearing the
relics of antiguity. The fileld studies have divulged temple
incarnates found scattered at length and breadth. It is the utmost
duty of every individual to preserve and conserve the relics of the
past which have filled the pages of the history for the posterity.
Thanking you,
-Dr.
H.A.Parshwanath

JAINISM AND MEDITATION |
|
-by
Jyotindra Doshi |
"JINA" means victor: the individual who
has conquered his passions of anger, pride, greed, hatred, and
thoroughly achieved self realization. The followers of Jina is Jain.
Jainism directs each individual, like you and me, how to make upward
progress of our spirit, soul, and how to gain eternal happiness in our
life.
There are five codes of conduct:
1) Non-Violance (Ahimsa), 2) Truth (Satya), 3) Non- Stealing (Achauraya),
4) Purity of body and mind (Bramacharya),
5) Non-possessiveness (Aparigrah), These codes are similar to the
ethical code preached by other religions in the world.
In our body there are five major power centers:
1) Center of Knowledge located on the top of the head. 2) Center of
Perception located between the eyebrows.
3) Center of Purification located in the throat. 4) Center of
Happiness located near the heart. 5) Center of Energy located in the
navel area.
Following is the process of mediation through which we control our
mind and concentrate on the great qualities of our soul.
1) Breathing Technique: Exhale-Inhale nine times at each power center.
2) Sound Vibration:Creating 'OHM' or Navkarmantra.
3) Feel the flow of energy through different centers starting from the
naval to the head.
4) Think about pure qualities of the soul. Think about a perfect,
bodiless soul.
Think about these affirmations: Perfect knowledge: I have
power of knowledge, Perfect vision: I have power of vision, Eternal
Happiness: I am eternal happiness, Perfect Energy: I have energy,
Everlasting: I am everlasting.
5) Forgiveness: KHAMEMI SAVVE JIVA - I forgive all the living beings.
SAVVE JIVA KHAMANTU ME - I seek pardon from all the living beings.
MITTI ME SAVVA BHUTESU - I am friendly towards all the living beings.
VERAM MAJJHAM NA KENVI -And seek enmity with none. MICHHAMI DUKKADAM!-
Forgive me for my ignorance!
6) Self-Realization: I am pure soul. I am not body.
Concentrate on three spiritual jewels: Right Knowledge, Right Vision
and Right Conduct. While meditating, exhale and inhale through the
process, drawing our energy from the naval to head. Concentrate on
endless virtues and attributes of our soul. The practice of meditation
helps us to purify our mental state, to control our emotions of
hatred, greed, etc., and feel eternal happiness and serenity.

KERALA TO INTEGRATE SPIRITUALITY AND MEDICINE |
|
Tiruvananthapuram (Kerala), November
5: The government of Kerala is making efforts to integrate
spirituality with the medical system in their bid to tackle the
growing incidence of mental afflictions in the state. The idea is to
ensure availability of a psychiatrist, laboratory, referral
infrastructure and other modern facilities in these centers to enable
them to better serve patients. It intends to set certain standards for
more than 100 spiritual healing centers presently operating in the
state and has sent notices to 26 prominent institutions to gauge their
reactions about the proposal. "The response has been encouraging. The
majority of them are willing to experiment using the scientific tools
along with spiritual practices," SMHA Secretary, Dr. Suraraj Mani
said. "Spirituality is even part of the medical curriculum in several
universities in the United States. The psychiatrists in the country
should welcome our initiative since a large number of mentally ill are
reluctant to seek modern treatment due to the stigma attached to the
mental hospitals in the country," Dr. Mani believes. Spiritual healing
centers have a greater social acceptance in India as a large number of
mentally ill prefer these centers believing they provide a better
feeling of safety and comfort than mental hospitals. Kerala has
several temples famous for healing the mentally ill.

TASTING THE MANGO |
|
August 2002 saw an
international convention in the UK titled Tasting The Mango ( read
more:
www.youngjains.org.uk).
Tasting The Mango lives on with a recent one-day event on 26th
Oct 2002, TTM: Slice of the Mango. Hosted in Northampton, UK,
delegates also came from Manchester, London, Coventry, Wellingborough,
Milton Keynes and even Germany! Many new faces and some TTM graduates,
with about 80-90 people in total.
It was a fantastic and phenomenal day
with about 80 – 90 people attending from right across the age range.
Most of the delegates were under 18, with some coming with parents and
grand-parents – making it a real family event. Three core workshops
covered atma, samyak darshan, kshayas, raag/dwesh, mithyatva and the
qualities one should develop espoused in Maitri Bhavanu (by Pujya
Shree Chitrabhanuji) bringing the philosophy and practice of Jainism
together. This was done in the TTM style of English pop music,
stories, interactive workshops getting the crowd thinking and sharing,
powerpoint movies, 10 day challenges, High 5’s, Mango Hugs and Mango
Dancing.
Feedback has been really
good with interest form Manchester for Young Jains TTM to be delivered
there.A great day event facilitated by OAUK Northampton, Shree Chandna
Vidyapeeth and delivered by Young Jains – with really great teamwork
by a bunch of people enthusiastic about Jainism.

NEW BOOKS PUBLISHED BY JAIN
CENTRE OF GREATER BOSTON |
|
|
The Jain Center of Greater Boston (JCGB)
has published two new booklets on Jainism: (1) Jain Prarthana Book
and (2) Shri Samayik Sutra. Since the inception of Jain
Pathshalas in North America, it has been observed that the
teaching of Jain Prayers and Sutras to youth born outside India
has been an extremely challenging task for Jain Pathshala
teachers. This has been due primarily to a lack of suitable
material for the youth. After extensive efforts, JCGB has
compiled these two booklets with only one objective - to present
this material in a simple and appealing way. The Jain Prarthana
booklet presents many popular Stutis. These Stutis are presented
in the original Devnagari script with transliteration and
translation.
The Shri Samayik Sutra booklet has
been prepared in order to |
|
|
|
instruct the readers of how to
perform Samayik, even if one does not know all of the necessary
sutras and ritual procedures. A simplified and step-by-step Samayik
procedure and sutras are presented in this booklet for youth,
which are easy to read and understand. Detailed discussions have been
omitted for simplicity’s sake. In Jain traditions, Samayik is the
first and the most important avashyaka (essential). It is important
to teach Samayik in our Pathashalas in the simplest way possible. Both
of these booklets (8-1/2x11 inch) are very aesthetically pleasing in
appearance and have been printed with colorful, high-quality,
graphics. The fonts are large and easy to read for young children.
The transliteration guides that are provided will help Pathashala
teachers to teach correct pronunciations.
In both of these booklets, emphasize has
been given to the importance of preserving the original pronunciation
of Sanskrit and Prakrit sutras and stutis. The true expression of our
religious texts can only be achieved by preserving the original
languages in which they were composed with correct pronunciation. JCGB
takes deep satisfaction in filling an acute void of high quality
teaching materials for youth who are in elementary or middle school.
We believe that these two booklets will certainly help Pathshala
teachers in preserving some of our venerable stutis, sutras, and
Samayik Vidhi.
Premal and Kashmira Vora of JCGB will
distribute these books at a very reasonable cost. These booklets are
available in a package of 20 books (10 Prayer Books and 10 Shri
Samayik books). The cost is $60.00 for 20 books (no cost for domestic
shipment, extra cost will be added for overseas shipping). Please do
not hesitate to make this small investment for the next generation of
Jain youth.
