Varanga

    Varanga is an ancient Digambar Jain temple in the Hebri taluk, Udupi District Karnataka.

    Jain Temples at Varanga – There are 3 Digambar Jain temples at Varanga: Matada Basadi,  Kere Basadi/Chaturmukha Basadi, Neminath Basadi/Hire Basadi.

    Nemianth Basdi/Hire Basadithis temple is spread over an area of 70 feet by 70 feet and is about 700 years old. A bronze idols of 24 tirthanakaras in kayotsarga posture is in the Navaranga (Wide Hall). The idol of main deity Lord Neminath is 5 feet high.
    The Neminath idol was installed on 4th May 1518 & was installed by Abhinavavadi Vidyananda Swami, a disciple of Devendrakeerthi Bhattarakhadeva.

    Matada Basadi – This temple has the black-colored idol of Tirthankar Parshwanath in the Kayotsarga posture.

    Kere Basadi/Chaturmukha Basadi – This temple is located in the middle of a pond (Kere), hence the name Kere Basadi. Its has entrance on all its four sides with the Sanctum santorum in the centre hence the name Chaturmukha basadi. It has the idols of Tirthankar Ananthanath, Shanthinath, Neminath and Parshwanath as the  main deity. An idol of Goddess Padmavati is installed in front of the Parshwanath idol. This idol is believed to be miraculous and has a huge follower ship in the region.

    Inscriptions at Varanga – Over 20+ Jain inscriptions found here stand as a testimony to its history and Jain heritage.

    Jain Math & Temple Trust – A Digambar Jain Math is found here and is aligned to Jain Math at Hombuja/Humcha. His Holiness SwastiSri Dr. Devendrakeerthi Bhattarakha Swamiji of Hombuja, the pontiff of the Jain Math at Homvuja is the pontiff of this Math as well. 

    Location – Varanga is located at a distance of 25  Kms from Karkala, 40 Kms from Udupi and 83 Kms from Mangalore.

    The pooja at at the Jain temples here are performed as per the Digambar Jain tradition.

    Accommodation Facilities – Good boarding and lodging facilities are available at Varanga. There are about 10 family rooms and 3 halls for pilgrims to stay over night.
