History- Gommatagiri a place near Mysore is Famous for its monolithic statue of Sri Gommateshwara situated at the top of a hill called Shravana Gudda.The standing snakes with their hoods om either side of the statue are very attractive and unique of the Gommata sculptors seen in India.Though no any inscription is available throwing light on the space it is said that Chengalvas and Kongalvas enshrined the place. The facilities in the place was improved by Late Sri C.B.M.Chandriah. An annual mahamastakabhisheka cermony is celebrated every year during the September or October months. A row of the foot prints of the 24 tirthankaras are seen carved and installed near by the hill in the recent decades. The model of Samavasarana can be found in the place. |
