Jains plan drought-free project in two districts

Bengaluru (Karnataka), December 16, 2018: As part of its efforts to mitigate the water crisis across drought-prone states in India, members of the Jain community in Karnataka will work towards making Raichur and Yadgir districts drought-free.

A memorandum of understanding was signed between the state government and the state chapter of the Bharatiya Jain Sanghatana (BJS), a non-for-profit organisation here on Saturday.

“We will train farmers on techniques to revive local water bodies through desilting. We’ll begin training in a month’s time and also provide them desilting machines free of cost. The entire project will be funded through contributions from members of the Jain community. It’s part of our community’s contribution to nation building — we’re doing programmes in women and girl child empowerment in other states,” said Dinesh Palrecha, president, Karnataka chapter of BJS.

Rajiv Kumar, vice-chairman, NITI Aayog, said the projects will be modelled on those done in Maharashtra. “Efforts will be made to replenish groundwater sources. We hope to complete the project, which is part of our Drought-free Karnataka mission by next July,” said Rajendra Lunker, national general secretary, BJS. – News Courtesy: Times of India
