Jain community of the city was abuzz with religious activity on Thursday, observing Samvatsari, the last day of ‘Parva Paryusan’ – an eight-day festival. Considered the holiest day of the Jain calendar, it is observed by both sects of the Jain community – Digambars and Shvetambars.
Ludhiana (Punjab), September 1, 2011: Jain community of the city was abuzz with religious activity on Thursday, observing Samvatsari, the last day of ‘Parva Paryusan’ – an eight-day festival. Considered the holiest day of the Jain calendar, it is observed by both sects of the Jain community – Digambars and Shvetambars.
In Ludhiana, most of the people from Jain community gathered at Atam Vatika on Thursday. Here, 75-year-old Amar Muni whose both kidneys are damaged, was seen observing the fast for the eighth day. Many visited the place to seek his blessings.
Chief patron of All India Jain Conference Hira Lal Jain said, “The community keeps a fast for eight days and it is known as Parva Paryusan. Thursday was the last day, ‘Samvatsari’. It is spiritually one of the most important days for the community.” He added: “In some parts of the country, people even close their shops and businesses for eight days. Sant Amar Muni has more than 400 ‘sadhus’ and ‘sadhvis’ under his guidance… he has been fasting for eight days despite medical advice against it. Hundreds of people have been coming to see him since morning and hear Chaturmas Katha,” said Jain. – News Courtesy: Times News Network
