Special team formed to probe ancient idol theft

Palanpur (Gujarat), February 29, 2012: The formation of SIT comes after chief minister Narendra Modi’s assurances to some representatives of the Jain community, who appealed to him for expediting the probe.

Head of the temple Moni Nirbhay Suriji, who has been on a fast since February 19, said the SIT acquired detailed information about the Chakreshwari Mata’s idol.

A dozen unidentified miscreants had stolen the 1,500-year-old marble idol of Chakreshwari Mata worth Rs 1 crore from the temple, located eight km from Visnagar, during wee hours on Sunday. They broke the channel gate and stole the 2.5-feet-high idol weighing 90 kg. Surprisingly, the thieves did not even attempt to touch the silver crown, umbrella studded with ornaments and cash.

The incident came to light when temple priest Shakuntla Devi saw that the idol was missing and alerted temple head Moniji.

“We have gathered evidence from the spot and efforts are on to nab the miscreants,” Jebaliya said. – News Courtesy: Times of India
