Patna

History – The present city of Patna was called as Kusumpur in the history. It was built by Udayan, a follower of the Jain religion, in memory of his father. The large city was the capital of the Magadhas. King Udayan built in it manyJain temples, Gajashalas, Ashvashalas, Pansadhashalas, dispensaries etc. This is the birth place of Yashobhadra Surishvarji, a disciple of Jambu Swami, Bhadrabahu Swami and other great sadhus. The royal courtesan named Kosa lived in this city. Muni Shri Sthulibhadraji asked permission for his monsoon sojourn in her house got it and changed the courtesan kosa into a Shravika observing the twelve vows. This is a long-remembered incident in the history of the Jain religion. The two sects of Svetambars and Digambars came into existence since the times of Sthulibhadra. Sthulibhadraji died here. This place was a very prosperous city of Jains till the seventh century. Later on, it was divided into small towns. Sheth Sudarshan also died here. It is said that he was taken to the gallows but by virtue of navkar mantra, the gallows were changed into a throne. A memorial related to this incident can be found  at this place even today.

Besides this we can find a Svetamber temple, five Digambar temples, the memorial of Sudarshan Sheth (gulzar baug) on the bank of a pond and the memorial of Acharya Sthulibhadraji. The idols in the Museum here, in the Kendriya Sangrahalaya and the Jalansangrahalaya are full of ancient works of art and archietecture.
