Nidugal

    How to Reach – Nidugal is situated in the Pavagada taluk of Tumkur district. It is at a distance of 9 Kms from Rangasamudhra. Rangasamudhra is at a distance 25 Kms from Pavagada along the Pavagada Chalakere road. Pilgrims can take their vehicles to the top of the hill.

    Approach road from Pavagada – Proceed along the Pavagada Challakere highway. Pavagada – Kotagudda – Shailapura – Bellibattalu – Nidugal.

    Approach road from Shira – Shira – Amarapura – Arachikere – Chikkatimmanahalli – Nidugal.

    Approach road from Rangasamudra – Rangasamudra – Chikkatimmanahalli – Nidugal.

    Temple Name – Sri Kashtaharana Parshwanatha Swamy Digambar Jain Temple.

    Main Deity – A black coloured 3 feet high stone idol of Bhagawan 1008 Sri Parshwanatha in kayotsarga posture.

    History – The temple of 1008 Sri Kashtaharana Bhagawan Parshwanatha situated on the top of the hill is very ancient. This temple is said to have been constructed in the year A.D.1232. This temple is also called as Joguvatti Basadi.

    Temple Layout

    The temple is well protected with a small fort like compound around it.

    It has a manasthambha followed by the main temple. The temple has a Mukha mantapa, navaranga, sukanasi and a garbagriha. In the navaranga on the left side is found an inscription. The main deity of the temple Lord Parshwanatha which is about 4 feet high is made of a black coloured stone and is installed in a pedestal.

    To the left of the main deity in the navaranga is found another small enclosure. This enclosure houses the idol of Goddess Padmavathi.

    Inscriptions at Nidugal Basadi

    1. An inscription on the pedestal of the Parshwanatha image in the Parshwanatha Basadi on the Hillock reads as below –

    svasti srî Mûlasamgha-Dêsiganada pustaka-gachha Kunda-Kundânvaya Yimgulêsvarada bali srî-Nêmichandra-Bhattâraka dêvara Guddangalu Bellumbatteya bhavya-janamgalu mâdisida Pârsvadêvara pratime

    Meaning –
    The Parshwanatha idol at the temple was given to this temple by disciples of Sri Nemichandra Bhattaraka Deva of Yimguleshwara (name of a place) of Swasti Sri Mulasangha Pustaka Gachha Kunda Kundanvaya tradition.

    2. In the same  basti, on the pedestal of the small Jina figure on the top of the inscriptions reads as below –

    srimatu Olukka-Mahadêva si Chandayanu

    Meaning – A person by name Olukka Mahadeva Sri Chandaya.

    3. An inscription on a gong in the same temple reads as below –

    Bommakka’SuklasamlJeshta su 5 llû Nidugallu-durgada PâriSva-nathasvâmi basadige Gudibandiyâge iro Penagonde Hamppanna kotta jayagante

    Meaning – This gong was donated by a person called Penagonda Hampanna a resident of Gudibande (a taluk centre in the Kolar district of Karnataka) to the Parshwanatha temple of Nidugallu Durga on the 5th day of Bommakka Sukla Jeshta Shudda.

    4. An inscription on a bell in the same temple reads as below –

    Hivalambi nâma sat Vayisâka su 3 In Nigallu Pârisvanathasvàmi-bastige Râyadurgada Yagaapanu vapisida gante sa 1 ¾

    Meaning – This bell was donated by a person called Yagaapanu of Rayadurga to the Parshwanatha basadi of Nidugallu Durga on the 3rd day of Hivalambi Nama Samvatsara Vaishaka Shudda.
