Celebrating 100 Years of the Saint’s Visit and the Timeless Spirit of Jain Dharma
Shravanabelagola, Hassan District, Karnataka | 9th November 2025: The serene Jain pilgrimage town of Shravanabelagola came alive with spiritual fervour on Sunday as Vice-President of India Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan unveiled the statue of Acharya Shri 108 Shanti Sagar Maharaj Ji, marking 100 years since the revered Digambara monk’s first visit in 1925. The occasion also saw the formal naming of a new sacred hillock as “Shanti Giri”, symbolising the saint’s message of peace, renunciation, and inner purity.
The centenary commemoration, hosted by the Shravanabelagola Digambar Jain Mahasamsthana Math, drew monks, devotees, scholars, and dignitaries from across India – each gathering to honour the legacy of the saint who rekindled the ancient Digambara monastic tradition in modern times.

“A Land That Breathes Spirituality”
In his heartfelt address, the Vice-President described Shravanabelagola as “a land that breathes spirituality and stands as a timeless symbol of peace and renunciation.” He reflected on Karnataka’s deep cultural roots and the unbroken Jain heritage that continues to thrive here.
“Karnataka has always protected its traditions, heritage, and culture. Wherever you go, you can feel this spirit of preservation,” he said, praising the people of the state for safeguarding India’s cultural identity.
Shri Radhakrishnan speaking about towering 57-foot statue of Lord Bahubali on Vindhyagiri Hill aaid “marvellous embodiment of faith, artistry, and human devotion.” He also recalled how Emperor Chandragupta Maurya, guided by Acharya Bhadrabahu, renounced his throne to seek liberation at this very place – a story that, he said, continues to inspire spiritual seekers across generations.
Honouring a Saint of Renunciation and Compassion
The Vice-President spoke with reverence about Acharya Shanti Sagar Maharaj Ji, describing him as a guiding light whose life personified the eternal Jain ideals of Ahimsa (non-violence), Aparigraha (non-possession), and Anekantavada (pluralism).
“In an age shadowed by materialism and restlessness, Acharya Ji’s life reminds us that true freedom lies not in possession, but in self-restraint; not in intellect, but in inner peace,” he reflected.
Despite living under colonial rule, Acharya Ji remained steadfast in his vows, even when the Digambara tradition faced severe challenges. His discipline and spiritual strength were legendary – he is said to have observed over 9,900 days of fasting during his lifetime, an unmatched example of endurance and faith.
Guided by Visionary Leadership
The Vice-President commended His Holiness Swasti Shri Charukeerthi Panditacharyavarya Bhattaraka Swamiji, the long-serving head of the Shravanabelagola Math, whose leadership has ensured the success of four grand Mahamastakabhishekas, including the 2018 ceremony witnessed by millions.
He also praised His Holiness Abhinav Charukeerthi Bhattaraka Swamiji for expanding the Math’s role beyond spiritual service -establishing schools, hospitals, and research centres that embody the Jain ideals of compassion and learning. The Prakrit Research Institute, under his guidance, has become a vital centre for studying the ancient Indian language and Jain scriptures.
“The efforts of the Math and its pontiffs ensure that Shravanabelagola continues to radiate as the living heart of Jain philosophy,” Shri Radhakrishnan said.
Cultural Bonds and Living Heritage
Drawing attention to the deep links between Jainism and Tamil Nadu, the Vice-President noted,
“Once upon a time, two-thirds of Tamilians followed Jainism. The contribution of Jain monks and scholars to Tamil literature during the Sangam and post-Sangam periods is immense.”
He highlighted the Government of India’s decision to grant Classical Language Status to Prakrit, calling it “a proud moment for our civilizational memory,” and commended initiatives like the Gyan Bharatham Mission, which is working to digitize ancient Jain manuscripts.
A New Hillock, A New Chapter
The newly named Shanti Giri Hill now joins Vindhyagiri, Chandragiri, and Charugiri as the fourth hillock of sacred significance in Shravanabelagola.
- Vindhyagiri – crowned by the colossal statue of Lord Bahubali.
- Chandragiri – where Emperor Chandragupta Maurya attained salvation.
- Charugiri – housing the memorial of 33rd revered pontiffs.

A Living Message for the Modern World
In his concluding remarks, the Vice-President shared a poignant reflection:
“When Emperor Chandragupta came to Shravanabelagola, he showed that no matter how great one’s worldly achievements, the ultimate truth lies in spirituality. Let this sacred land continue to guide humanity toward peace, tolerance, and self-realization.”
As the sun set behind the ancient hills, the newly unveiled statue of Acharya Shanti Sagar Maharaj Ji stood in silent grace – a reminder of a century-old legacy that continues to inspire seekers of peace and truth.
“Shravanabelagola will forever remain the shining jewel of India’s spiritual heritage,” Shri Radhakrishnan affirmed, his words echoing through the valley of faith.
