Idol theft: Suspect brought to Gandhinagar

    Gandhinagar (Gujarat), March 30, 2012: Rajasthani history-sheeter and husband of a sarpanch Chappan Singh Meena, who allegedly robbed the centuries-old idol from Umta Jain temple, was brought to Gandhinagar on Thursday. He was remanded in police custody for 14 days. The special operation team that was formed to probe the theft case also brought the stolen idol to Gandhinagar.

    Chappan had allegedly stolen the idol, estimated to be worth over Rs 1 crore, from a temple in Mehsana.

    He was arrested during a secret operation that was carried out at Sadpuda village of Karoli district in Rajasthan a day earlier. He was also allegedly involved in illegal trading of arms in Rajasthan.

    On the instructions of Chief Minsiter Narendra Modi, the Gujarat Police had constituted a team of officials from the Ahmedabad Crime Branch, Mehsana and Gandhinagar to investigate in the case. – News Courtesy: The Indian Express
